One Is One and All Alone Essay â€Å"One is One and All Alone† by Nicholas Fisk is a science fiction story, set in 2045. The main character is Trish, an 11-year old girl who is the only child on a spaceship to Trion. Her father is the Executive Officer of the spaceship and her mother is in Trion helping to set up a space station. She will only meet her mother in mid January 2047. After three months, she feels lonely and bored as she does not have any real friends to talk to except her private, multi-functional diary: the Voice Printer (VP). VP is an intelligent computer which keeps Trish entertained with its ability to perform many functions. Through her dialogue sessions with VP, Trish learns about clones and the cloning process. The idea of cloning fascinates Trish and she soon decides to create a clone to keep her company in the spaceship Bio lab without her father’s knowledge. She names her new identical twin â€Å"Clo† and initially it becomes her perfect friend and companion. They have fun playing and sharing their time together. However, certain mannerism of Clo begins to irritate Trish as the clone behaves and thinks like her. Soon they start to argue and disagree with each other over trivial matters. The last straw happens one night when Clo starts referring to Trish’s mum as her mum and this upsets Trish as she feels her privacy is being invaded. The next day, Trish opens up her diary and confides in VP that she does not like to be â€Å"swamped, invaded and taken over.† At that instant, she decides to dispose off Clo forever through the â€Å"DISPOSAL† hatch near her cabin. The story ends with a twist when it is Trish who is disposed by Clo. Clo then assumes Trish’s identity and Trish’s dad is not aware of the change at all. Clo then enjoys being â€Å"one is one and all alone† and her new lease of life as Trish in the spaceship.

Formation of the Greek Empire :: essays research papers

"Our constitution is called a democracy because power is in the hands not of a ministry but of the whole people." Pericles was one of the many people who helped shape Ancient Greece to what we know of it today. The famous Greek Empire has bits and pieces from each ruler or group of people who once occupied it: the Mycenaean's, Dorian's, Pericles, Phillip 2, and Alexander the Great. In ancient times, Greece wasn't a united country but more of a group of lands where Greek-speaking people lived. Around 2000.B.C. the Mycenaean?s settled on the Greek mainland seeking to form a civilization. Already having the geography provide to the Greek culture, they put in many ideas and developed a writing system with the help of the Minoans, a group of people who were native to the Greek mainland. They fought a ten-year war against Troy known as the Trojan War. Although they were victorious, the weakened civilization collapsed and a new group of people, the Dorian?s took Greece into what is known as the Dark Age of Greece. Being less advanced than the Mycenaean?s, the writing system was dropped and a new way to tell history was formed through word or epics. Two major city-states or polis formed: Athens and Sparta. Athens developed a limited Democracy, which was ruled by the people through representatives. This proved to be most efficient because all people were treated equal ly. Its was kept under control with a set of laws that harshly punished citizens for even the simplest crimes created by Draco in 621B.C. Solon came into power in 594 B.C., and took out Dracos? wicked methods by making four social classes based on wealth and abolishing debt slavery. Around 500 B.C., Cleisthenes created the Council of Five Hundred in which council members were randomly chosen by only citizens could be in a limited democracy. He also rearranged the social classes formed by Solon into ten groups based on where a citizen lived rather on wealth. Education in Athens was only given to males and when they became of age they then went on to serve in the military. Athens honored cultural things such as art and literature. Sparta was a military state run by an oligarchy government or rule by a small group of citizens based on wealth. Social order in Sparta consisted of citizens, noncitizens and helots. Sparta had the strongest army in Greece.

Avid Exiting

There are many reasons why I wish to get out of the Avid program. I personally feel like this class isn't helping me in any way shape or form, I know I'll do fine without Avid and I want to do electives which I would actually enjoy and would make my remaining two years of high school memorable. This year would be my third year in Avid. My past two years of Avid have not been enjoyable nor have they helped me.There's been many cases where I needed help on a question, and would wrote it down as a tutorial question; I stopped doing that once I realized how uncooperative the students were, I would only be helped if a tutor was in our group which was unlikely due to the low amount of tutors we have. The questions other students would write were in no way beneficial to them or the group because they already knew the answer too them. Although some questions were deceiving with their length or appearance to make the question look ‘hard' they really weren't.The students would go up and answer it within a minute and sit back down without explaining; when I wanted an explanation I would get it, but with attitude for them not wanting to at least explain how they solved the problem. This irritated me so I soon chose to Just go to tutoring when I needed any sort of help. Although I see why Avid is a well-recognized program, Vie personally had no benefit from it. It's because of this that I predict exiting from the program won't affect me.I know Avid will look good in my college transcript but I don't worry about that since I have pretty good grades and keep them that way. When I need help, I can always go to my teachers for tutoring, as I already do. I'm aware that this is a new ear and a fresh start but if it's the same thing all over again, I know I would regret staying in the program for yet another year. The only reason Vie chosen to stay in Avid the past two years want to please people who encouraged me to stay but now I shall take a stand for myself.I only have t wo years left of high school and I want them to be memorable. I want to Join the electives I actually want to be in like culinary arts or yearbook. Vie built up such a negative vibe towards Avid, I'll only people down if I do stay. Vie been told that as an Avid student I should feel, â€Å"Lucky because there is a list of people waiting to Join Avid hat actually want to be in here and work†. My exiting won't affect me or the program.Someone who I know will be a great addition to the program would simply replace I respect people's opinions of why I should stay in Avid but getting out of Avid won't stop me from being successful. I have high expectations for myself and I know I will strive with or without Avid; and in the end it's my choice. I am responsible for myself and what I believe is best for me, along with my parent's of course. My decision is made and I hope I'm given the opportunity to exit the program. By Griswold

How Cultural Expectations Affect Both Men And Women

The life of being an average male human is extremely difficult. If you don’t make enough money or don’t know how to change a tire, everyone immediately looks down on you as a disappointment. You are constantly fighting the uphill battle of being expected to care for women, but not care too much or appear unmasculine. Gender expectations have become increasingly rigid, pressuring men into feeling forced to fit into them. There is evidence of this in our literature as well. While most stories involve a main character breaking out of his/her expected role, like Katniss or Tris from The Hunger Games and the Divergent series’ respectively, some authors take a more realistic approach. James Joyce’s unnamed narrator in his short story Araby and†¦show more content†¦That is why when the three girls walk in, Sammy is immediately drawn to them. Some may argue that Sammy is solely attracted to the girls for their looks, just like any other teenage boy. His d escriptions of them seem very prepubescent, yet they are incredibly in depth. By comparing Sammy to the other AP employees, the butcher and Stokesie, a moral line is drawn between the two. Stokesie and the butcher are clearly ogling the girls for the youth and beauty. While he was attracted to them physically, there was something more there for Sammy. Through them he sees the better world for himself that he had desired for so long. Porter addresses this in his article by reviewing Sammy’s description of the â€Å"Kingfish Fancy Herring Snacks† as symbols of â€Å"men in ‘ice-cream coats’† and â€Å"women in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks†(Porter 3). Sammy craves a life of excitement and adventure unlike the dull one he is stuck in, and the girls are a refreshing change of pace from the average AP shoppers. Porter describes Lengal as â€Å"the Voice of The Establishment†(Porter 4) during his soft berating of the girls, which clarifies Sammy’s irrational decision to quit.
